One of the best ways to examine team expectations around the major leagues before the season is by taking a look at the odds bookmakers set. With sports gambling at an all-time high in America, and more and more states legalizing betting, there are several different projections to look at. So, what are the current odds saying about the 2023 New York Mets?
Full-Season Team Odds
There are five different types of bets that are helpful in projecting a team out over a 162-game season. These are the World Series odds, pennant odds, division odds, playoff odds, and win totals. Here are how the Mets stack up:
- World Series: +750 (11.76 percent chance)
- National League Winner: +400 (20 percent chance)
- National League East Winner: +135 (42.55 percent chance)
- To Make Playoffs: -500 (83.33 percent chance)
- Win Total: 94.5 wins
Analysis:
As of now, the Mets are tied with the Los Angeles Dodgers with the third-best odds to win the 2023 World Series. The only two teams ahead of them are the Houston Astros (+600) and New York Yankees (+650). Specifically, the Mets own the NL East’s best odds at a World Series title, ranking ahead of the Atlanta Braves (+1000) and Philadelphia Phillies (+1400).
Given the above, it is no surprise that New York is also currently tied with the Dodgers with the best odds to win the NL pennant. The Braves and San Diego Padres trail closely behind with +450 odds. Meanwhile, the defending NL champion Phillies own +700 odds.
As for the NL East title, the Mets are slim favorites at an implied 42.55 percent. The Braves trail close behind with an implied 41.67 percent chance, while the Phillies sit at 25 percent. Both the Miami Marlins and Washington Nationals are longshots with +4000 and +25000 odds, respectively.
The Mets’ current win total is set at 94.5. This is tied for the fourth-highest win total in the major leagues. Only the Astros, Dodgers, and Braves (95.5) have higher totals.
Meanwhile, the Mets’ implied 83.33 percent chance to make the playoffs are the fifth-best in the major leagues. The Dodgers, Astros, Braves, and Yankees each have slightly better odds than the Mets. The Phillies trail New York with an implied chance of 73.68 percent to make the postseason.

Individual Players Odds
There are also several player-specific preseason odds that are always interesting to look at. The main being MVP, Cy Young, and Rookie of the Year. Here are how some noteworthy Mets stack up in these areas:
- National League MVP:
- Pete Alonso: +1400 (10th-best)
- Francisco Lindor: +2500 (13th-best)
- Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer: +10000 (tied-26th-best)
- Brandon Nimmo and Starling Marte: +15000 (tied-38th-best)
- Jeff McNeil: +20000 (tied-47th-best)
- National League Cy Young:
- Justin Verlander: +700 (third-best)
- Max Scherzer: +800 (fourth-best)
- Kodai Senga: +8000 (22nd-best)
- Edwin Díaz: +15000 (tied-32nd-best)
- José Quintana: +20000 (tied-51st-best)
- Carlos Carrasco: +20000 (tied-51st-best)
- National League Rookie of the Year:
- Kodai Senga: +750 (tied-fourth-best)
- Francisco Álvarez: +1200 (tied-eighth-best)
- Brett Baty: +2000 (tied-14th-best)
Analysis:
As you can see, the Mets have several different stars on their roster. Alonso and Lindor each have decent odds at MVP. Meanwhile, top-of-the-rotation veterans in Scherzer and Verlander are both getting love with top-five odds for the NL Cy Young. Lastly, 30-year-old rookie, Kodai Senga, has one of the best odds for NL Rookie of the Year. Both Álvarez and Baty are getting love for this award as well.
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, preseason odds end up meaning very little. There is not one perfect way to project how a whole season of 162-games plus a postseason will end up. Especially this far out. Though, the bookmakers do usually give us a pretty good idea of what to expect.
With that being said, it is always nice to see the Mets grade out so well. It was not until about a year or so ago that the Mets were always expected to do so well and enter the season with such high expectations. Though, as owner Steve Cohen stressed when he first bought the team, the Mets are expected to contend of a championship once again this year.
