According to earlier reports, the Mets had some interest in free-agent outfielder Nelson Cruz. Adam Rubin of ESPN New York immediately downplayed the Mets interest writing that they were not nearly as interested in Cruz as some reports have indicated.

Today, Jerry Crasnick reports that Cruz’ salary demands have now exceeded the Mets’ appetite, according to a source. This may explain signing Chris Young today for one of the two available corner outfield spots.

I hope the reports are untrue, but lately these guys have been spot on. I always felt that Cruz would be a perfect grab for the Mets. He’s coming off a .266/.327/.506 season with 27 homers in 456 PA.

Cruz is believed to be seeking a 4-year deal in the $50 to 60 million range.
