Yesterday was a big day for me when I learned that George Lucas announced that all six films in the Star Wars Saga will be converted to 3D!

According to the press release, Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace is expected to be released theatrically in 2012.

Being a huge Star Wars fan along with my son, I wanted to create some Star Wars graphics to celebrate the occasion and also have a little fun with the Mets at the same time.

Here are some of the main characters in Episode I The Phantom Menace and some of the Mets that I believe matchup well with them.

Qui-Gon Jinn – Johan Santana – A fearless warrior and courageous leader who was cut down in his prime, but through the power of the force we will see him again in all his glory. Commune with him again, we shall.

Anakin Skywalker – David Wright – The “Chosen One” was prophesied to one day save the galaxy, but will he? And what about those damned midichlorians?

Senator Palpatine – Frankie Rodriguez – He was selected to ‘save” the galaxy, but things started to fall apart quickly since his arrival. The Dark Side I sense in him.

Obi-Wan Kenobi – R.A. Dickey – He uses the force to make his pitches defy the very laws of gravity, and at the age of 36 he is among the wisest of sages on the Mets.

Jar Jar Binks – Luis Castillo – He bobbles baseballs, trips down the stairs, drops small orbs, and sometimes says the darnedest things… he’s perfect for this role.

R2-D2 – Ruben Tejada – Our little friends are surprisingly capable defensively and loved by all, but what impresses me the most is that they both have a knack for saving the day.

Yoda – Jose Reyes – He can do it all and his ability to make an impact knows no boundaries. His blinding speed was no match for Count Dooku. Many look to him for victory, and when he is on base, victory is usually the final outcome.

Darth Maul – Oliver Perez – An undermining force bent on doing his own will and taking down anyone who gets in his way. As Anakin Skywalker once said, “A Sith thinks only inward and about themselves.”

Mace Windu – Carlos Beltran – A wise, powerful, and never to be taken lightly Jedi Master. In his prime, nobody yielded a light saber with as much mastery and precision.

Hope you enjoyed the distraction from the same old, same old, at least for one day. Leave me some of your favorite Star wars characters and which Mets fit them the best in the comments. Come on, you know you want to. Before I go, here’s one last graphic I made five years ago for Mets Merized.

Have a great day Mets fans and may the force be with you! 🙂
