Right-handed pitcher Drew Smith, who the Mets received from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for Lucas Duda, has been phenomenal for the Double-A Binghamton Rumble Ponies since his acquisition.
Yesterday, the 23-year-old struck out seven consecutive batters, fanning seven of the eight batters he faced in 2.2 innings. He now has a 1.00 ERA and 0.67 WHIP in the nine innings he’s pitched with Binghamton. He’s struck out 10 and walked two.
He now has a 1.75 career minor league ERA across three seasons and has struck out 150 batters in 133.2 innings, walking only 39 and pitching to a 0.943 WHIP.
You can learn more about Smith here. Many scouts say he has late-game potential, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he makes a strong case for a spot on the 2018 Opening Day roster. He could end up being a huge asset in the Mets bullpen in the coming years.
In other news, Jacob Rhame, who the Mets got in return for Curtis Granderson, made his Mets debut yesterday for the Triple-A Las Vegas 51s. He pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning, recording a strikeout. The 24-year-old now has a 4.22 ERA in 49.0 innings this season and has struck out 56.
