It is official… The Mets have agreed to terms with first-round pick 1B Dominic Smith who signed his contract today at Port St. Lucie where he has been working out.

Smith, a big left-handed first baseman out Serra High School in California, was selected 11th overall in this month’s First-Year Player Draft.

The Mets reportedly signed Smith for under slot at about $2.6 million, just below the $2,840,300 value for the 11th overall pick.

Miami Marlins v New York Mets

Mets first-round draft pick Dominic Smith is close to signing with the New York Mets, according to ESPN New York’s Matt Ehalt.

This confirms what Smith’s parents told us, who believed their son would be signed by this weekend.

“He just wants to play baseball again,” they told MMO.

So it now appears that just a physical stands in the way of an official announcement.

Smith will report to St. Lucie once everything is cemented, and will work out at the Mets complex before being assigned to either the GCL Mets or Kingsport to begin his professional career.

The Mets 11th-overall pick in the First-Year Player Draft, is just 17 years old, but his mom also told us that he could be ready in as little as two years. Wouldn’t that be awesome…
