Dominic Smith has been overlooked to a degree by New York Mets fans with all of the hype surrounding his team and top prospect Amed Rosario.

However, Smith is still likely a long-term fixture in the Mets plans at first base in the major leagues and this July is showing why he might be that answer.

Smith, 22, is slashing .385/.429/.723 with seven doubles, five home runs, 18 RBI and 19 runs scored in 15 July games. In that span, he’s struck out seven times and has walked four times.

Last night in the 51s’ 4-2 win, he hit a three-run game-winning double with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning. He also blasted his 13th home run of the season in the first inning.

For the 2017, the smooth fielding first baseman is hitting .334/.388/.512 with 27 doubles, 13 home runs, 64 RBI and 66 runs scored. He’s also leading the entire minor leagues with 128 hits and his 27 doubles are tied for second in the Pacific Coast League.

Minor League Notes –

Another Mets first base prospect has been on fire in the minors, Peter Alonso. He hit another home run yesterday, giving him four in his last eight games and seven in the second half. In 25 second half games, the 22-year-old Alonso is hitting .323/.396/.656 with only 16 strikeouts and eight walks.

Binghamton Rumble Ponies third baseman David Thompson is slashing .287/.351/.475 over the last month after a brutal start to his Double-A career.

Columbia Fireflies closer Adonis Uceta last allowed an earned run on May 7, since then he’s thrown 27.1 scoreless innings and picked up nine saves. In those 27.1 innings he’s given up only 13 hits and struck out 32. He’s been clocked at 96 MPH with his fastball this year.

Chris Flexen is for real, and you won’t stop hearing his name until we possible see him in the big leagues later this season. He’s now 6-1 with a 1.66 ERA in ten starts for Binghamton. During that time, he has struck out 50 compared to only eight walks and the league is hitting .165 against him.

Amed Rosario has missed the last two games for Las Vegas with a bruised index finger.
