Defeated. Emotionless. Beaten. These are all words you can use to describe the current state of the New York Mets ballclub. As the season starts to dwindle out of their grasps, is there any fight left in what looks like a lifeless team.

After Thursday’s completion of a three-game sweep at the hands of the lowly Diamondbacks, it seems as though this club has officially hit rockbottom. The effort caused an explosion from manager, Terry Collins during his postgame interview. Maybe too little too late from the under fire Collins. Curtis Granderson knows his manager is feeling the heat.

“He’s the head of the ship, being the manager,’’ Granderson said. “He feels that pressure on himself from the outside in terms of us going out there to perform and be victorious in any situation possible. (Newsday)

“So of course he’s going to have some situations where he’s not going to be as happy as you would expect him to be, and after a loss like today, it doesn’t make the situation any easier.”

His players are not making it easy by any means. Scuffling in every possible way. The Mets have been unable to get out of their own way this season.  Whether it be their inability for the clutch hit, a fielding error or a blown lead by the bullpen, this team is failing in every way possible.

One player though who has not failed as of late, Neil Walker, continued his stance as the speaker for the club after the closed door meeting held between manager and players Thursday. Walker said Collins had nothing but positive vibes for his club.

“No berating, nothing about that,’’ Walker said. “It’s about keeping it positive. You guys can dissect it however you want it, and that’s your job, but internally, that’s the way we see it.’’

“Experts” have stated the Mets must win 87 games to clinch that second Wild Card spot. For the Mets to do this, they would need to go 30-18 the rest of the way. Does this team have the fight in them still to come out ahead ?

The team has looked uninspired on the diamond. It is hard to believe that they still have the ability to dig deep and pull this out. Crazier things though have happened. They have the talent, it is just a matter of putting it together. A six game stretch beginning tonight with the Padres and the Diamondbacks yet again could very well determine where the Mets end up in the standings
