Right-hander Jacob deGrom will not be heading to the bullpen after the All star break as manager Terry Collins suggested on Saturday.
“We’re not going to take Jacob deGrom out of the rotation,” Collins said after the game on Sunday. “I say that now, but we might look up in a month where he is starting to run out of gas a little bit, where we have to make a decision. He’s pitched very, very well. He didn’t even have his best stuff today. He did a great job.”
While not nearly as dominant in his last start, deGrom shined, allowing just one run in seven innings and even helped himself at the plate with a go-ahead single in the fourth as the Mets completed a sweep of the Marlins.
DeGrom allowed just five hits and walked two while striking out eight batters. The rookie allowed fewer than three earned runs for the 10th time in his 12 major-league starts and continues to be a force in the Mets rotation.
Sandy Alderson has said that deGrom would be limited to about 185 innings this season and including his 38.1 innings in Triple-A, deGrom is at 112 innings for the season.
David Wright has been impressed with how deGrom came out of nowhere and seized the opportunity.
“He’s one of guys that was a little under the radar. You heard about the Syndergaards. You heard about the Wheelers and Montero. But you never really heard too much about deGrom. He’s got a live arm and throws strikes.”
DeGrom is now 3-5 with the Mets and owns a 3.18 ERA with 72 strikeouts in 73.2 innings. Additionally. he’s batting .280 with seven hits in 25 at-bats.
What a find… Not only is he pitching effectively but he has a great attitude and you could tell he’s having so much fun out there. It’s become infectious.
I kept watching him in between innings today and it appears he’s struck up a great friendship with Matt Harvey… You could see the two of them discussing strategy during the game or just joking around and keeping things loose in the dugout. I am really looking forward to the second half… This team has become so much fun to watch…
