Mets starting pitcher Jacob deGrom was expected to throw to live pitchers on Sunday, but instead threw a long bullpen session, according to Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News.

DeGrom threw 42 pitches, some with Michael Conforto standing in the box just tracking pitches. The 29-year-old suffered a setback last week with a stiff lower back, but said his back and arm felt good Sunday.

There has been some concern that deGrom will miss the first week of the season. Mets manager Mickey Callaway would like each of his starters to start five spring games to be loose for the regular season. With the regular season rapidly approaching, time is shrinking for deGrom to accomplish that goal.

Mets pitching coach Dave Eiland said deGrom is not ruled out for Opening Day but they aren’t going to do anything to risk his health.

The right-hander will pitch in a simulated game Tuesday.
