The Mets managed to get out of Atlanta with one win in their four game series with the Braves, taking the series finale by the score of 7-2.
Jacob deGrom made the start for the Mets, and pitched six very effective innings. DeGrom struck out 10 Braves, allowing two earned runs on five hits while walking only one.
Tonight’s game was different for deGrom in that he received an unusual amount of run support. DeGrom was staked to a 4-0 lead in the third inning, when Michael Conforto drove in a run, and Robinson Cano followed with a two-RBI single. Wilson Ramos capped the scoring in the third with an RBI single. In the fourth inning, Cano drove in another run, and Ramos belted a two-run home run to give the Mets a 7-0 lead.
The news was not all good in Atlanta for the Mets. Before the game, Jeff McNeil was scratched with back stiffness. Both Amed Rosario (quad tightness) and Cano (groin tightness) left tonight’s game. All three are considered day-to-day with their injuries, according to Luis Rojas in the post-game press conference.
The injury bug also bit the Braves, as starter Mike Soroka left the game in the third inning with an apparent leg injury.
Former Met Travis d’Arnaud homered off deGrom for the Braves’ first run in the fifth inning. D’Arnaud haunted his old teammates once again, after his game-winning three-RBI double on Friday night. Ronald Acuna Jr.drove in the Braves second and final run with a single in the fifth.
Offense
Robinson Cano stayed hot for the Mets, going two-for-two with three RBIs before leaving the game due to injury. Cano is now batting .412 on the season.
Michael Conforto was three-for-five tonight, a much-needed productive night at the plate after frustrations in both this series and the previous series against the Red Sox. Conforto is now batting .325.
Wilson Ramos awoke from his doldrums at the plate, going two-for-four with three RBIs. Ramos raised his season average to .210.
Pitching
DeGrom led the way with another excellent effort, and his ERA now stands at 2.21 on the season. DeGrom notched his first win of the season, and his record stands at 1-0.
Jeurys Familia pitched two thirds of an inning, allowing two hits while striking out two.
Justin Wilson got the most important out of the night. With the Mets leading 7-2 in the seventh, Freddie Freeman came up with the bases loaded and two outs. Wilson retired Freeman on a ground ball to first base.
Jared Hughes made his Mets debut tonight, and pitched the final two innings. Hughes allowed no hits, walked two, and struck out three with his variety of sinkers and sliders down in the zone.
On Deck
The Mets, now 4-7, continue their road trip in Washington for a two-game series with the Nationals. Steven Matz will make the start for New York tomorrow night. Patrick Corbin will make the start for the defending champs. The game starts at 7:00 and will be telecast by SNY and broadcast on WCBS-880 AM.
