Mickey Callaway announced on Friday night that Mets ace Jacob deGrom is headed back to New York to get an MRI on his “barking” elbow.

The MRI will take place on Saturday. The Mets announced that deGrom has been placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to April 16.

Via video from Matt Ehalt of Yahoo Sports, Callaway said that deGrom first felt the issue on Thursday when he was playing catch in St. Louis. DeGrom originally was supposed to start on Friday vs St. Louis but had his start moved back because of strep throat.

Ehalt notes that pitching coach Dave Eiland says the Mets are being “uber cautious” with deGrom and it if was later in the season he might’ve pitched through it.

Jason Vargas will start on Friday night instead. Noah Syndergaard is scheduled to start on Sunday, Steven Matz on Monday, and Saturday vs St. Louis is to be determined.

The 2018 National League Cy Young Award winner has struggled to start the 2019 season with a 3.77 ERA and 1.27 WHIP through four starts.
