After exiting Friday night’s game with right flexor tendonitis, Jacob deGrom spoke to the media after the game to discuss the severity of the injury and his concern level.
DeGrom said he was dealing with the flexor issue throughout the week, but he felt it getting better as the week went on. Although he felt it tighten up a bit in the sixth inning, he’s not too worried about the issue moving forward.
“I’m not too concerned about it cause it didn’t get much worse as the game went on,” deGrom said. “But there in the sixth inning, when I was trying to loosen up, I could feel it and it was tightening up a little bit.”
DeGrom, who threw six innings of one-hit ball with 10 strikeouts Friday night, mentioned that he’s constantly doing his own ligament tests. After departing from the game, more ligament tests were done and everything checked out alright.
“I’ve had a couple of elbow issues before,” he said. “I know what that feels like, so my level of concern is not too high. I’m pretty optimistic about it, and I’m pretty sure it’s something that we can treat and hopefully not miss any time.”
Mets manager Luis Rojas isn’t too concerned with deGrom’s availability moving forward, either. While the Mets will continue to check on him, Rojas said he expects deGrom to make his next start, and he stated that he trusts his pitcher.
As of now, the team has no MRI planned for deGrom, according to Rojas.
DeGrom’s next scheduled start is lined up for Wednesday, June 16 against the Cubs at Citi Field. If deGrom’s able to make the start, he’ll carry a 0.56 ERA into the contest, which is the lowest ERA ever among pitchers through their first 10 starts of the season.
