R.A. Dickey took a giant step forward on his quest for that coveted NL Cy Young Award tonight as the Mets defeated the Miami Marlins by the score of 3-0.
The Mets knuckleballer spun a complete game shutout to earn his seventeenth victory of the season, tying him with Cincinnati’s Johnny Cueto for the most wins in the Majors.
Dickey allowed just five hits, walked three and struck out seven batters in what would be his third shutout of the season. He kept the Marlins off balance most of the night and they only had one baserunner reach as far as third base. With the win, Dickey lowers his ERA to 2.63 for the season. It’s been an amazing ride for the Mets ace this year and he is showing no signs of slowing down. He’s been absolutely remarkable and incidentally, four of his seventeen wins have come against the Marlins.
In a word the Mets offense was flat, mustering just four hits all night against the Marlins pitchers. However, Ike Davis did all the damage beginning with a sac fly to score Ruben Tejada in the fourth, and then the big blow – a two run bomb in the seventh inning to put the Mets up 3-0 and seal the victory for Dickey. Ike Davis has put his season-long slump in the rear view mirror and is looking more like the player we saw to start the 2011 season before he injured his ankle. It was the 25th homer of the season for Davis, and his 17th dinger on the road.

Thanks to Ike Davis’ two-run jack, the Mets have now homered in seven straight games.
I kind of smirked when Jose Reyes got picked off first base by R. A. Dickey in sixth. 😉
Before the game, Terry Collins said he regretted the decision to have Josh Thole pull the ball this season and make him a power hitter. (Make him a power hitter?) Their goal is to try and resurrect the 2011 version of Josh Thole from now through the end of the season.
Dont expect a horde of September Call-ups tomorrow. Collins said nobody will be called up from Double-A and only two hitters would be coming from Triple-A; Mike Nickeas and possibly Zach Lutz. That’s odd…
