Mets captain David Wright has been placed on the 15-day disabled list, the team announced.

Eric Campbell was removed from Triple-A Las Vegas’ game last night and headed to New York when Wright came up lame after sliding awkwardly into second base in the eighth inning of Tuesday nights game.

Wright was diagnosed with a “mild hamstring strain” after undergoing his MRI earlier today. He received a cortisone shot and will rest for two days before beginning baseball activities accordingly.

“A couple of feet before the bag I just felt my hamstring grab. I thought it might be something that I could stretch out a little bit, but then I took a couple of secondary leads and just realized that if the ball was put in play I wouldn’t have been able to do anything positive, that’s for sure. It took a couple a pitches and it didn’t get any better. That’s when I thought I’d rather say something and hopefully catch this thing before I make the same mistake I made a couple of years ago, when I tried to play through it and made it worse.” Wright said after the victory over the Phillies last night.

Wright was showing shades of his old self to kick off this season, as he hit .333/.371/.424 with one home run and four RBI’s through the first eight games.

“I pride myself on going out there and trying to play every day, and this just sucks.”  Wright later added.

This is obviously a huge blow to the Mets. It hasn’t exactly been smooth sailing in the early goings of the season as we have already lost Zack Wheeler and Josh Edgin to Tommy John Surgery, Jenrry Mejia to an 80-game suspension, and now Wright to a hamstring injury. He insists it’s not as serious as it was the last time he hurt his hamstring, but you just never know. It’s a very touchy injury.

Fingers crossed that Wright is out for the shortest possible time, and will pick up where he left off when he returns.

Until then, the Mets will call on Eric Campbell for the time being, who was hitting .550/.625/1.050 through six games for the 51’s this season. (Small sample size, I know). In 85 games for the Mets last season, however, Soup hit .263/.322/.358 in 190 at-bats.

Personally, I think Campbell should have made the team out of camp instead of the Mets going with an eight man bullpen. Playing short-handed on the bench isn’t always the best option, like in situations as last night when Wright left with the injury, the Mets had to resort to putting Anthony Recker at third.

Anyway, I still think if Wright is out for an extended amount of time, Matt Reynolds will be called up.
