In a column for Newsday, Marc Carig posted comments that David Wright made this week while discussing the way he envisions his role on the team. The Mets third baseman understands that he is now the public face of the franchise and that the fans now expect him to ultimately lead this team to a post season run.
“I want to do everything I can to meet the goals that I have and the goals the organization has,” he said this past week.
Carig reports that Wright was clued in by Sandy Alderson that they were likely trading away R.A. Dickey, and that he did not hesitate to offer his endorsement immediately after the trade was officially announced. Wright also called to introduce himself and welcome both Travis d’Arnaud and Noah Syndergaard to the organization, which he’s done before in the past with Zack Wheeler and Mets top draft picks Brandon Nimmo and Gavin Cecchini.
With regard to the plan, which for now only a select few know, Wright said he feels privileged to know what the future holds, but that he won’t make any recommendations unless he’s asked to.
“Am I lucky and do I feel privileged that Sandy has shown me and talked about the plan moving forward? Of course,” Wright said. “But by no means am I going to be — unless he asks me my input on something — I’m not going to be in his ear trying to convince him to do this or that. If he asks my opinion, I’ll be more than happy to share it.”
