Anthony Rieber of Newsday caught up with Jose Reyes who misses his old buddy David Wright and wished he could have been part of the excitement and celebration after the Mets clinched the top Wild Card on Saturday, and secured home field advantage.

“He has to be here,” Reyes told Newsday. “He’s the captain of our team.”

“Me and David, we basically played so many years together, playing different positions, and here I am playing third base, the position that David played every year. I mean, like, whoa, what’s going on here? I wish David was here with us right now.”

For me, not seeing David Wright celebrating with his teammates was kind of bittersweet. And I could only imagine how sad Wright was at not being able to be there, although he says he was there in spirit.

Wright, 33, is still in Los Angeles where he continues to rehab his neck and back after having season-ending surgery in June.

He was among the first to text his long-time friend Jose Reyes as soon as the Mets completed their 5-3 victory over the Phillies. He sent a photo holding a holding a bottle of Amstel Light and texting, “Cheers boys! Hell of a finish! Enjoy!”

A seven time All Star with two gold gloves and two silver slugger awards, Wright will go down as the best position player the Mets ever developed. He owns over a dozen franchise records and is the all time leader in hits, doubles, runs scored and runs batted in.

For most Mets fans, Jose Reyes and David Wright will always be linked together, and according to manager Terry Collins, the Mets Captain is expected to join the team on Wednesday when the Mets will take on either the Giants or Cardinals.

I, for one, will be looking forward to seeing Wright in that dugout where he belongs. It’s been a rough and very painful two years for him, but hopefully surrounding himself with a team that still looks up to him, will do his heart and spirit some good. Seeing him reunited with Reyes will be a very special moment.
