After a blistering month at the plate, third baseman David Wright has been named the National League’s Player of the Month for June.
Wright has a spectacular month batting .404 with 11 doubles, 6 home runs and 29 RBIs.
Wright joins Howard Johnson as the only Mets ever to win that honor twice in their career.
Also, Mets.com reports that Wright became the first player in Mets history to hit at least .400 with 25 or more RBIs in a calendar month, and he established a club record by notching eight three-hit games in June. During the month, he went 42-for-104 at the plate while leading the Senior Circuit with 29 RBIs, placing second in slugging percentage (.683) and on-base percentage (.447) while tying for third in doubles (11), adding six homers and stealing four bases in 26 games.
For the season, Wright is now batting .317 with 14 homers and leads the NL with 64 RBIs. He is on pace to break the Mets single season record of 124 RBIs which he now shares with Mike Piazza.
Call me crazy, but if Wright continues at this current pace, he could become the first Met ever to win the Most Valuable Player award.
