Mets pitching prospect David Peterson made his 2020 spring debut on Monday, shutting down the reigning World Champs.

Peterson, 24, got the start in West Palm, working two innings against the Washington Nationals. The left-hander worked around an Asdrubal Cabrera single to pitch a scoreless first inning.

The former first round pick pitched a perfect second inning with a strikeout. He became the first Mets starter this spring to pitch two innings.

Peterson allowed one hit, no walks, and struck out two during his sharp outing. The most encouraging note from the start was Peterson topping out at 94 mph according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. He was mostly 90-92 during the 2019 season.

The Oregon product talked to reporters after his impressive start:

While Peterson is unlikely to make the Mets roster out of camp, Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen noted during the offseason that David could make his Major League debut in 2020.

Peterson had a fine season in Double-A Binghamton in 2019. He had a 4.19 ERA, 3.19 FIP, and 122 strikeouts in 116 innings. More recently, in the Arizona Fall League, Peterson had a 3.46 ERA, 2.00 WHIP, and 13 strikeouts in 13 innings.

The 2017 first round pick is expected to be important starting rotation depth waiting in Triple-A Syracuse this season.
