The New York Mets have several pitching reinforcements on their way. After Tylor Megill made a rehab start on Saturday and news broke of Kodai Senga being set to throw a live batting practice on Monday, it was announced that David Peterson would make a rehab start of his own in St. Lucie’s (Single-A) game on Sunday.

Peterson has been progressing back from offseason hip surgery. In his first rehab appearance for Single-A St. Lucie, the left-handed starter was dominate. Peterson threw 28 pitches (20 strikes) across two innings. He struck out five batters without allowing a hit or walk. The only hitter to make contact off of Peterson grounded out softly to first base. All of the strikeouts Peterson induced were of the swinging variety.

Peterson has not pitched in a major-league game since September. In 2023, he had a very tough season, posting a 5.03 ERA across 111 innings. He struggled mightily with his control, walking 50 batters which was good for a 23rd percentile walk rate. However, he did excel at generating whiffs (72nd percentile) and strikeouts (71st percentile). He was much better in 2022, posting a career-best season, however, regressed mightily and will look to return back to his 2022 form when he is finally healthy and ready to go in 2024.

Potential news of his return is very important as current rotation starter Adrian Houser (8.37 ERA) has struggled mightily. It’ll be interesting where Peterson finds himself when he is ready to return as the Mets have all of him, Megill, Senga, and prospect Christian Scott waiting in the wings.
