CDN 37, a Dominican news channel, has reported that ten-time All-Star and Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz was shot in Santo Domingo in an attempted robbery. Ortiz was rushed to a hospital.

According to Marly Rivera of ESPN, Ortiz is out of danger, but he is still in surgery. Rivera reports that “the bullet hit Ortiz in the lower back, went through and through.”

The local reaction thus far has been one of shock and terror, with local businessman Elizeiel Salvador – who drove Ortiz to a nearby hospital – saying (translated), “this man deserves better! Everyone started running, even security! My God, he’s a hero!”

Ortiz reportedly told an ER doctor (also translated) “please do not let me die. I’m a good man,” as reported by Dionisio Soldevila of Periodico Hoy. Soldevila, who has been updating the public from the hospital, has reportedly been informed by a police chief that Ortiz is in stable condition.

Ortiz, 43, wrapped up a storied career in 2016 that featured three World Series championships, seven Silver Slugger awards, and ten seasons of 30 or more home runs. His 52.7 career bWAR ranks ninth in Red Sox franchise history, and his 541 career homers ranks 17th in the history of the game.
