With the Binghamton Rumble Ponies having the night off from their playoff series, the Syracuse Mets (59-83) were the only Mets minor league team in action Wednesday as they continued their final series of the year. On this night, the offense had a pair of six-run innings, and everyone in the lineup recorded at least one hit in the team’s 14-3 win over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders (71-73).

As far as the offense as a whole, three players had multi-hit games, four players drove in multiple runs, and all nine players were on base at least twice. Danny Mendick (2-for-6) was one of those players, as he had a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first, his 11th of the year. He and Jonathan Araúz combined for six RBIs out of the top two spots in the lineup. Carlos Cortes was on base four times with three walks and a double.

Even though the RailRiders got a run back in the second, the Mets would go immediately back in front thanks to a solo shot from Michael Perez in the bottom of the inning (ninth of the year).

Those would be all the runs that righty Denyi Reyes (2-3, 5.79 ERA) would need. Reyes did allow a pair of doubles in the second that led to Scranton’s only run. However, he would end up retiring the last ten hitters he faced.

Reyes went six innings, allowed one run on two hits, walked a batter, and struck out six on 79 pitches (54 strikes) in the win. The 26-year-old finished six innings for the seventh time this year and he leads the team in innings this year (91 2/3 innings).

After Reyes left the game, the Mets offense put up their first of two six-run innings in the sixth. Jaylen Palmer got the scoring started with an RBI double. He has driven in a run in five of the last six games and is ending his 2023 on a strong note.

As the inning continued, an RBI single by Araúz, an RBI groundout by Carlos Cortes, and a two-run single by Jose Peroza extended the lead to 8-1. Peroza knocked in three runs in the game and now has a 1.162 OPS in six games for Syracuse.

In the bottom of the eighth, the first six Syracuse hitters would reach base against Ron Marinaccio. Peroza would drive in his third run of the game with a single to make it 9-1. After a Perez walk gave him his second RBI of the evening, a Joe Suozzi single would give the Mets a double-digit lead.

By the end of the frame, the Mets would have a 14-1 lead thanks to a two-run double by Mendick and a sacrifice fly by Araúz against a position player (Jesus Bastidas). Mendick is hitting .438/.526/.667 with seven extra-base hits and 16 RBIs in 12 games since being sent back down to Syracuse.

Syracuse will be back in action on Thursday night (6:35 p.m. ET) when they send righty Mike Vasil (4-4, 5.48) to the mound for his final outing of the year. The last time Vasil faced Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on August 8 (8 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 BB, 7 K), he took a no-hitter into the bottom of the ninth. He is coming off of a 10-strikeout performance in his last start on September 14 against Worcester.
