With Daniel Murphy questionable for the start of the season with a hamstring injury, another spot on the Mets Opening Day roster could be up for grabs.

Sandy Alderson said few days ago that prospect Daniel Muno is being considered to fill in for Murphy, and Muno has seized the most out of this potential opportunity.

Muno has been blistering hot this spring, and he increased his Grapefruit league average yesterday to .400 with another excellent day the plate. Muno went 2-for-4 with a home run, a triple and three RBI in the Mets 12-3  victory over Miami.

After the game, Terry Collins praised Muno for his impressive performance (Newsday).

“He’s been made aware there’s some bench jobs out there,” manager Terry Collins said. “He’s looked very, very sharp so far.”

Muno first caught the attention of Mets minor league analysts immediately after he was selected by New York in the 8th round of 2011 draft . During his first professional season, he excelled for the Brooklyn Cyclones with a .355 average, .466 OBP and two home runs in 59 games.

However, his production diminished significantly as he moved up to the higher levels of the minors, and he quickly became an afterthought.

He was also suspended 50 games in 2012 for PED’s.

Despite his past issues, he now has a chance to redeem himself and make his dream of becoming a major league player a reality.

“I’ve dreamed ever since I was a little kid of being in the big leagues,” said Muno, who tripled home a run against Mat Latos in the Mets’ eight-run second inning and homered to right off Vin Mazzaro in the sixth. “It would be a dream come true.”
