The New York-Penn League have named Cyclones first baseman Cole Frenzel Player of the Week and teammate Luis Mateo Pitcher of the Week.
Cole Frenzel has been raking since arriving to Brooklyn once Short-Season got underway. He leads the league in over a dozen different offensive categories and is really in the midst of a frecord breaking season, batting .412 with a .492 on-base and .569 slugging percentage in 51 at-bats.
Perhaps the most remarkable thing about Frenzel, besides sharing a birthday with my father, is that he’s only struck out two times this season – a rarity to say the least, but even more so for a slugger. I love this guy, and our Minor League Editor Pete can’t stop talking about him whenever he checks in with me. We highlighted Cole last week on MMO and actually project him to be promoted to Savannah at some point this season.
We’ve been raving about right-hander Luis Mateo since last season on MMO, even naming him as our top sleeper for 2012 and the kid hasn’t disappointed us.
Mateo is now 3-0 after his latest dazzling performance which MMO was on hand for. He has a wonderful fluid delivery and a fast ball that can hit 95mph and has lots of movement. Mateo has a 0.51 ERA for the season and the 22-year old has struck out 22 batters while walking just two in 17 1/3 innings pitched.
It’s a nice surprise to see both these prospects honored and you can expect more such recognition for these two very talented Mets prospects in the future. Congratulations to both of them.
