Hey, I just wanted to let you know that Pete will be at Hudson Valley in a little bit to cover the Brooklyn Cyclones on the road. Stay tuned for some great pictures, insights from Rich Donnelly and the other coaches and players, and a few impromptu player interviews.
The Cyclones are off to a great start and are an exciting team to watch this season. With a 6-2 record, the Clones sit atop of the McNamara Division in the NYP League.
Brandon Nimmo is batting .185 with five hits in 27 at-bats to start the season for Brooklyn, but there’s no reason to fear as he’s piling on the walks, ten of them to be exact. In fact he leads the league in walks and that translates into a .421 OBP. So as you can see, Nimmo is actually having a great season at the plate thus far. Right?
Shortstop Phillip Evans is once again pounding the ball and picked up his first two homers of the season in week one while batting .310 and driving in three while scoring three. He could soon find himself being shipped to Savannah if he keeps this up and don’t be shocked if he shifts to second base once that happens.
How about first baseman Cole Frenzel? The big North Dakota native s batting .409 which is good enough for third in the NYPL and it’s a far cry and a huge improvement over his numbers at Savannah. I say we should let him stay a while and just let him continue to mash opposing pitchers before we consider shifting him back to the Gnats. Confidence will go a long way with this one.
Oh and right fielder Eudy Pina (YOU-DEE) may only be batting .233 to start the season, but he makes his hits count and leads the team with nine ribbies. He had three hits last night so he could be heating up.
On the pitching side of the equation lets hear it for Luis Mateo and Gabe Ynoa, as both right-handers are off to an amazing start.
Ynoa has already made two starts and in 12.0 innings pitched he’s allowed just six hits and a walk and struck out eight batters while posting a 1.50 ERA and 0.58 WHIP.
Mateo has been even better and in his two starts he’s struck out an unbelievable 16 batters in 11.2 innings pitched while walking only two batters. He’s second in the league with a 0.77 ERA and the league is batting just .103 against him. Can you hear the sizzle?!
