curtis granderson

Curtis Granderson did not enter the game until the sixth inning as a pinch-hitter Tuesday night. It though was still one of his best offensive games of the year as the Mets defeated the Marlins by a score of 7-4, overtaking them in the Wild Card and NL East standings.

Granderson, batting for starter Seth Lugo in the sixth, blasted a solo shot to leadoff the inning, giving the Mets some needed cushion. He would stay in the game in place of Jay Bruce after the homer, and he would provide more offense.

“It’s tough to pinch-hit in any situation,” Granderson said. “Not an easy task by any means.” (ESPN)

He would again get another at-bat in the seventh, this time with a man on base, something he has struggled with all season. This time though he would connect for a two-run shot to help break open the game for the Metropolitans. Of Granderson’s 22 homers this season, his seventh-inning shot against the Marlins on Tuesday was only his third with a man on base.

Granderson became the third player in franchise history to homer twice in a game he did not start. The others: Hawk Taylor in 1964 against the Phillies and Scott Hairston against the Nationals in 2011.
It has been a down season for Curtis, hitting to a .223/.314/.433 slash with 22 homers and just 38 RBI. If last night though was an indication of the “Grandyman” coming around at just the right time, it could be a huge weapon for the Mets going down the stretch.
