Coronavirus has hit baseball.

No, it was not the Mets. The Mets did have their own scare though earlier this week when Donovan Mitchell Sr., the Mets’ director of player relations and community engagement, tested negative for COVID-19.

Jeff Passan of ESPN reported on Sunday morning that a minor league in the New York Yankees system has tested positive for coronavirus. We do not yet know the name of the player. He has been quarantined since Friday morning after running a fever.

This is the first positive case of coronavirus in all of baseball.

A note has gone out to minor leagues from Yankees executive Kevin Reese:

“Please be advised that we have a confirmed positive test for a player in (minors) camp. The patient is recovering well. We have been in constant contact w/the Dept. of Health and they have taken charge of (our next steps) …”

Passan adds that all Yankees minor league players have been told to self-quarantine for two weeks in their hotels/motels. The team will have meals delivered to them.

We will keep you posted as we learn more. Let’s hope this is contained and does not spread through the league – minors or majors.
