The New York Mets (82-75) defeated the Miami Marlins (55-102) by a score of 5-4 in 11 innings Tuesday night at Citi Field. With the Milwaukee Brewers winning again, the Mets are five games out of a Wild Card spot and a tragic number of just one.

Pitching

Noah Syndergaard (10-8, 4.30 ERA) toed the rubber for the Mets on Tuesday and again saw mixed results. Over five innings, the strapping young right-hander yielded four earned runs and scattered 10 hits while striking out seven.

In the second inning, the Marlins got on the board first as Isan Diaz launched his fourth home run of the year to left field. Later in the inning, Miami extended their lead as Jon Berti singled to bring home Austin Dean for the second run of the game.

In the third, Diaz struck again, this time chipping in a run on a single to right field. This would give Miami a three run lead.

The fifth inning saw Miami tally another run as Jorge Alfaro, who smoked the Mets on Monday, drive in another run with a base hit to center for the fourth run of the game.

That inning would be the end of Syndergaard, who ended up with a no-decision thanks to a strong performance from the bullpen behind him and a late offensive surge.

After Syndergaard, Chris Mazza, Luis Avilan, Seth Lugo, Justin Wilson, Jeurys Familia and Paul Sewald combined to toss six scoreless frames while striking out eight.

Sewald would ultimately obtain his first big league win after starting his MLB career going 0-14.

Offense

The Mets offense got off to a slow start on Tuesday but ultimately prevailed to give New York a come-from-behind victory.

Miami kept the Mets off the board until the seventh inning, when Michael Conforto launched his 32nd home run of the campaign to trim the deficit to 4-2.

The score would remain 4-2 until the ninth when the Marlins were on the cusp of victory. However, Conforto struck again with another two-run bomb to tie the game up at four apiece.

The game went to the 11th inning when the Mets loaded the bases against Jeff Brigham. The ever-patient Brandon Nimmo stayed relaxed and drew a walk to send the fans home happy and prolong the season for one more day.

Cy Young award hopeful Jacob deGrom (10-8, 2.51 ERA) will get the ball for the Amazins and will be opposed by Robert Dugger (0-3, 4.45 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.
