Mickey Callaway told reporters before the game that Michael Conforto is sitting today because he has been dealing with a sore/swollen thumb for a couple of weeks.
The manager said, though, that Conforto will still be available to pinch-hit today and should be fine to play on Tuesday in Washington against the Nationals.
Conforto, 25, jammed it really badly a week-and-a-half-ago, but also jammed it twice in last night’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
However, he has shown no effects of the injury as he is 11-for-30 (.367) with three home runs and nine RBI since the All-Star break.
The outfielder’s season has not been as spectacular, though, as he is hitting .230/.352/.401 with 14 home runs and 39 RBI on the year.
