michael Conforto

Outfield prospects Michael Conforto and Brandon Nimmo have both made it onto Baseball America’s Midseason Top 50 Prospects rankings.

Conforto, who checked in at No. 14, is up there with catching prospect Kyle Schwarber (No. 6) as the top college bats from the 2014 draft.

Selected 10th overall out of Oregon State, Conforto is enjoying a breakthrough season, his second as a pro, and is hitting .313 with a .397 OBP and ten doubles, two triples, three home runs, and 19 RBI in 128 at-bats for Double-A Binghamton.

In an exclusive interview with MMO last month, we asked Michael what he needed to improve on to get to the majors.

“I think I need to be more consistent at the plate to try and avoid slumps like I had in St. Lucie. I also need to continue to work on my defense and putting myself in good positions to make plays.”

“I also need to work on my baserunning like taking extra bases, knowing when to be aggressive because it’s small things like that which separates the  guys here (AA) from the guys playing in the Majors.”

Meanwhile Brandon  Nimmo, the Mets top pick in the 2011 Draft, came in at No. 48 and it was great to see him make the cut.

“Nimmo isn’t a sexy prospect”, writes BA. “But he plays center field, gets on base and shows occasional pop.”

The Nimmo is batting .288 with a .350 on-base in 212 at-bats for Binghamton. He’s hit 11 doubles, two triples and two home runs with 13 runs batted in.
