After allowing a home run with nobody out in the second inning, Bartolo Colon retired the next 18 batters he faced last night, en route to his sixth victory of the season.
Colon was dominant for 7.1 innings, allowing just two runs on four hits while walking one and striking out seven.
It was the fifth straight start that he’s allowed two or fewer runs and he has a 1.83 ERA with 30 strikeouts and eight walks over that stretch. Opponents are hitting .209 (28-134) against him during his run.
Colon has been at his best when the Mets are home and he boasts a 2.34 ERA in five starts at Citi Field this season.
If you throw away that one bad start in April against the Angels, the 41-year old veteran has earned every penny of the two-year, $20 million dollar deal he signed last offseason. But could he be on the way out?
That’s what MLB Network’s Peter Gammons speculated on Thursday, saying that GM Sandy Alderson could trade Colon to either the Orioles, Mariners, Blue Jays or Brewers as a cheaper alternative to David Price who he also believes will be traded before next month’s deadline.
Trading Colon makes sense, says Gammons, because the Mets can use the money they free up elsewhere, plus they have Noah Syndergaard on the horizon.
Sounds like even Gammons believes the Mets have no more money for upgrades and will have to move salary in order to fill other pressing needs.
