USATSI bartolo colon

Kristie Ackert of the Daily News reports that Bartolo Colon was suffering with a back issue in his last start and that he could miss his next scheduled start on Saturday according to a team source.

Colon, who turns 41 next month, has been receiving treatment on his back for the past two days. The issue came up right before his start Sunday, but several Mets sources said they did not learn about it until after the game.

Regarding whether he’ll be able to make his next start, “It remains to be seen,” the source said.

Sandy Alderson, on the other hand, said he expects his big offseason acquisition to be ready, according to Marc Carig of Newsday.

The Mets signed Colon this offseason to a two-year, $20 million deal to fill the hole in the rotation left by Matt Harvey who will miss the 2014 season.

Colon was torched for nine earned runs by the Angels in that last start – including back-to-back-to-back home runs, bringing his ERA to 6.00 for the season.
