dillon gee

According to manager Terry Collins, Dillon Gee will now slide back into the Mets rotation and will replace Zack Wheeler, who in all likelihood is out for the season due to a torn UCL in his right elbow.

“I’d have to say it’s Dillon Gee’s job right now,” Collins said. “That’s why we have him. He’ll be the guy.”

What I question is whether this is even Terry Collins’ call to make?

Earlier today during Sandy Alderson’s conference call, the Mets GM hesitated when asked if Dillon Gee would be joining the rotation.

“We’re still digesting the injury to Zack and really have not started to address that issue,” Alderson said. “That’s something we will look at over the next two, three days.”

A team source told Joel Sherman of the New York Post that the Mets are strongly considering Rafael Montero for that fifth spot in the rotation even though they know Gee is not happy pitching out of the bullpen.

Not sure how true that is, but where there’s smoke there’s sometimes fire.

One thing seems certain, and that is the Mets do not intend to open the season with with either Noah Syndergaard or Steven Matz in the rotation, an organization source told Adam Rubin of ESPN New York.

Bottom line… With Collins all in on the veteran Gee and Alderson being very noncommittal, we may not know who actually replaces Wheeler for some time yet.
