Terry Collins didn’t mince words last night, and his pre-game concerns of how he sensed a lack of energy from the Mets inside the clubhouse before the game, proved to be prophetic.

“We were a little flat,” Collins said. “They’re human beings and the adrenaline knock out for a while, and the fact that they got about probably five or six hours of sleep didn’t help either.”

The Mets looked dead from the neck up last night. They weren’t just flat, they flat lined.

These are the games the Mets are supposed to win. They are supposed to beat up on losing teams like the Cubs who are now 23 games under .500.

If Terry Collins saw it coming then why didn’t he do something about it?

Johan Santana certainly came to play and deserved a similar effort from his teammates last night who were supposed to have his back.

If you’re pooped, tired and don’t have any adrenaline to go out on the field for three hours and play your best, then we don’t need these types to be on the field.

George Brett and Paul Molitor never mailed it in. Neither did Tom Seaver, John Olerud or Gary Carter.

We don’t have the luxury of taking games off like the Mets did last night – embarrassingly so. We’re simply not that good…

We have to give 110% effort everyday and we can’t just throw away games because a few overpaid kids were jet lagged or only got six hours of sleep instead of seven, or because they can’t get amped up against a lousy team like the Cubs.

For crying out loud, Play Ball!
