Let’s face it: you really don’t want to go mano-a-mano w/ the Phils in extras given the power hitting match ups. Seemed like we just might win it in the tenth. Alas. We are all reeling for one of this season’s most frustrating losses to the ever-more hate-able Phils, 5-4 in 11 innings.

Mets didn’t play badly tonight, but they simply never converted numerous opportunities to score runs in bunches as they should have. One of those horribly frustrating affairs when we just couldn’t get men in no matter how many base hits…

For the most part fielding was excellent–Tatis, Reed—but we couldn’t come up with other great plays, such as Wright on the grounder w/ bases loaded, and Beltran with his rarely dropped ball after jumping up against the center field wall.

Phils defense simply topped ours tonight, especially that full-on diving grab by Werth. If only for a miss, you would have been in bed w/ sweet dreams earlier.

And when we desperately needed a long ball…nothing.

You could second guess bringing out Pelf for the 7th, but after the anger toward Utley and subsequent victory over him, seemed like Pelf had the stuff to go above 100 pitches, and finish seven strong innings, but it wasn’t to be. Green didn’t pitch badly, but it wasn’t good enough.

The shame of tonight’s game are the two biggest issues, 16 men LOB, and allowing the Phils to come back from another three-run deficit. And tonight they beat us. You have no idea how much it pains me to say this, but tonight we kind of proved Hole Camels right: we choked

Redding is on the mound tomorrow, and we need him to pitch as well as is humanly possible for him, and, God, we need to win this series

I think we can all agree about one thing: failures and injuries aside, the 2009 Mets are one hard-fighting group, but that won’t amount to much unless we win more often than not.

Let’s Go Mets!
