Rasmus Colby

Free agent outfielder Colby Rasmus has become the first player since it’s inception to accept the qualifying offer, and will return to the Astros on a one-year deal for $15.8 million, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

Rasmus, 29, hit at a .238/.314/.475 clip and hit 25 home runs for the Astros in 2015, after signing with Houston last offseason on a one-year deal.

The centerfielder had a tremendous postseason for the Astros, as the lefty hit a robust .429 and ripped three home runs in twenty at-bats, including the game winner in the wild card game against the Yankees.

What’s most notable about this deal is that Rasmus will be the first player to ever accept the qualifying offer, which is most likely going to see a change within the next couple seasons.

In my opinion, Rasmus would have been a nice fit for the Mets outfield, but I didn’t see the Mets forfeiting a first round draft pick for him.

Rasmus will now look to have a solid season and seek out a multi-year deal next offseason.

By the way, Daniel Murphy has until 5:00 PM tomorrow to accept or decline his qualifying offer.
