If the new Mets administration hadn’t let you know enough about the lack of depth in the Mets farm system, Steve Cohen took to Twitter Monday night offering a reminder: “Newsflash, the Mets farm system needs to be replenished.”
Cohen was commenting on the Padres’ trade for Blake Snell (and inevitably Yu Darvish), noting their strong farm system allowed them to trade assets for the Cy Young Award winner. He gave the Padres credit for making the acquisition.
Hey , Give the Padres credit. They had a top 5 farm system that gave them flexibility to trade for Snell. Newsflash, the Mets farm system needs to be replenished .

Whether Mets fans like to hear it or not (or if they think Cohen should be giving other teams “credit” for making good moves or not, though newsflash, it doesn’t matter), it’s going to be tough for them to pull off trades for players on the trade market given the state of their prospects. Teams often want close-to-MLB-ready players, if not guys who can play already in the majors, back, and the Mets don’t have a lot of that right now.
The Mets are generally viewed in the lower half of the league in terms of their overall prospect pool, and most of the talent in the system is in the low A/rookie ball level. These things take a couple years to build back up, especially when a bulk of the higher rungs of the system has been elevated to the majors (less often) or traded away (more often).
Jared Porter seems dedicated to making sure farm depth is a pillar of the franchise, and he has full support from ownership and team presidency.
