There’s an update to this story. The New York Times has confirmed that Coca-Cola is negotiating a deal to become the official soft drink of the New York Mets.
Any agreement will include replacing the giant Pepsi Cola sign that towers above Citi Field with Coca-Cola and renaming the Pepsi Porch will also be a part of the deal.
Life goes on…
Meanwhile, here is a statement Pepsi released regarding their decision to pull out of their sponsorship deal with the Mets.
“Pepsi loves the great sport of baseball,” Pepsi said in a statement. “We’ve had a productive relationship with the Mets and wish them all the best in the future, but have decided to reinvest in a different way.”
I told you this would be an exciting offseason!
November 9
It’s been a an iconic fixture since the ballpark first opened in 2009, but according to a report in Sports Business Daily, Pepsi Cola is walking away from their sponsorship deal with the New York Mets, and going with them is the huge 89-foot long Pepsi Cola sign in right field.
Able to be seen from miles away, the Pepsi Cola sign gave the ballpark some old-time charm and towered over the aptly named Pepsi Porch, which also goes and was one of the more popular seating sections and meet-up areas in the park.
Of course you can still sit there and meet-up there but it won’t sound as cool saying, “Meet me at the Amway Veranda.”
No word yet on what the team intends to do or if a new sponsor has been lined up, but the park is going to look a whole lot different without that bright red sign lighting up the night.
