Mike Puma of the New York Post reports that the New York Mets are hoping to retain Chili Davis as their hitting coach for the 2020 season. However, Davis wants a multi-year deal if he were to stay with the team.

In addition, Gary DiSarcina is expected to return to the coaching staff in 2020, but it is not yet known whether or not he will be the third base coach.

Meanwhile, Glenn Sherlock is unlikely to return and has been given permission to pursue other job opportunities.

DiSarcina, 51, was moved into the third base coach role in 2019 after serving as Mickey Callaway‘s bench coach in 2018. The team ended up hiring Jim Riggleman to serve in the latter role in 2019.

Davis, 59, took over the Mets’ hitting coach position before the start of the 2019 season as the team fired Pat Roessler during the offseason. In his career as a coach, Davis has served as the hitting coach for the Oakland Athletics, Boston Red Sox, and Chicago Cubs also.

Sherlock, also 59, was the Mets’ third base coach from 2017-2018 before being replaced by DiSarcina in that role. The team made Sherlock the first base coach in 2019. The former Arizona Diamondbacks’ bench coach (2015-2016) was also the Mets’ catching instructor while with the club.

As noted by Puma, Davis will still be paid in 2020 by the Cubs since he was under contract when they replaced him after the 2018 season.
