With Spring Training now at an end, I wondered which player delivered the best performance… and separated himself from the rest of the pack… We had plenty of players that stood out and turned in a solid spring campaign, but which one was this year’s top Mets player in Grapefruit League play?

I posed this question to our writers and we got back some great responses. Here are this Spring’s top performers for the Mets!

chris young

CHRIS YOUNG, OF

Gus – MVP of the spring has to be Chris Young. He has been a constant source of offense and has shown himself to be an option at leadoff, like someone wrote two months ago – along with calling Dillon Gee the Opening Day starter.

Xtreem – Chris Young. Arguably the best offensive spring, but unarguably the best offensive spring from a starting player expected to play regularly.

Robert P. – Chris Young had a .327 batting average. If he can carry that into the regular season and provide us with good defense, it was a great move.

Peter A. – Chris Young looked very, very good at the plate.

Steven G. – Chris Young. He’s looked really good.

Jacob – Chris Young! Let’s start with stats: .327 AVG, 8 XBH, .519 SLG, 5 BB in 52 at bats. I don’t know about you, but I’d take those numbers any day. Also, talk about proving the haters wrong. Young had a lot to prove this spring and in my book, he got it done. And don’t be surprised if CY’s name is penciled into the lead off spot come Opening Day.

USATSI dillon gee

DILLON GEE. RHP

David – Dillon Gee, and obviously so since he will be the Opening Day starter. He just took his opportunity and ran with it. Looking forward to a very good season from Gee.

Dylan – Dillon Gee

Kirk – Dillon Gee. Even though he’s pitched well in the past, he appeared to be on another level this spring.

Roger – Dillon Gee. He’s out to prove he’s not a throwaway to be cast aside when all of the young flamethrowers are ready. He’s pitching like a legit Opening Day Starter.

juan lagares

JUAN LAGARES, CF

TommyJuan Lagares

Mike S. – Juan Lagares – It may still not be enough to win the everyday CF job, but Lagares hit well, got on base, scored runs and made a myriad of great defensive plays.

Gerry – Juan Lagares scored the most runs, had the second most hits, and made highlight reel plays.

USATSI matt den dekker brad barr

MATT DEN DEKKER, OF

AndrewMatt den Dekker. 40 spring AB’s is a small sample size, but he ran with it, hitting .350 and slugging .876. Couple that with tremendous defense and he’s starting to look like the perfect platoon partner for either of our two right-handed outfielders. Besides SS, OF is perhaps the position at which we have the least depth, so a strong performance from a roster fringe candidate gives me faith in the inevitable event of an injury at some point in the season. Runner up is Dillon Gee, who more than earned the Opening Day start with his performance this spring.

recker walkoff

ANTHONY RECKER, C

DestryAnthony Recker. Tied for first in HR, tied for third in RBI, .405 OBP, .999 OPS was highest on the team with anyone that had more than 11 ABs.
