Yesterday, Jeff Wilpon spoke to the media prior to the Mets final game of the season. In that press conference, the owner touched on a number of things, including the team’s next general manager.
Wilpon told reporters that none of the three current acting GM’s will be next in line as the new GM or President of Baseball Operations.
Though the old school vs. analytics-driven personnel is said to be still up for debate, the COO did say that it likely will end up being somewhat of a “hybrid” between the two.
With the team planning on starting interviews this week, Jon Morosi of MLB.com notes that Ben Cherington, Jason McLeod, JJ Picollo and Ray Montgomery are all currently being viewed as possibilities to be the next GM in Queens.
Cherington is currently the Toronto Blue Jays vice president of baseball operations. He served as the GM of the 2013 World Series champion Boston Red Sox.
Picollo is the vice president of the Kansas City Royals. He is credited with putting together the Royals’ analytics department, which played a big role in Kanas City’s 2015 World Series championship.
McLeod is a San Diego native, and he currently serves as the Chicago Cubs senior vice president of player development and scouting. He is said to be ready to take on a larger role, he took home World Series rings with the Cubs and Red Sox.
Brewers vice president Ray Montgomery attended Fordham University, and is a New York native. He played for the Astros in the 1990’s, and has served in some Major League responsibilities as well as his work in scouting.
Wilpon added that the organization is currently under the impression that the search could last past the GM Meetings in November, and if that does happen the trio of John Ricco, J.P. Riccardi, and Omar Minaya will be in charge of starting the Mets offseason for the new guy.
