The Mets defeated the Braves by a score of 5-1 in tonight’s game at Turner Field in Atlanta. New York’s division lead increases to 8.5 games, and their magic number now stands at 14 with the Nationals 2-1 loss to the Marlins.

Offense:

Yoenis Cespedes carried the offense yet again with another amazing performance. He finished the day going 3-for-5 with a home run and 3 RBI.

He drove in the game’s first run on a RBI double in the third inning, and he later blasted a towering two run shot in the ninth inning to put the game out of reach for Atlanta.

He now has a .299 average on the season with 33 home runs and 100 RBI in 140 games.

Curtis Granderson did a great job out of the leadoff spot tonight as he reached base three times and scored three runs. Daniel Murphy and Michael Conforto also had productive nights at the plate as they each collected two hits.

Pitching:

Steven Matz pitched five solid innings and he limited the Braves lineup to just one run and six hits. While he stuck out a season low of only two batters, it was another effective outing for the Mets’ promising rookie. His record now stands at 3-0 and he has an outstanding 1.88 ERA in four starts this season.

The bullpen tossed four shutout innings in relief of Matz.  Erik Goeddel, Addison Reed, Tyler Clippard and Jeurys Familia were excellent and combined to strike out six while allowing only three runners to reach base.

On Deck: The Mets will look to win the third game of the series starting tomorrow at 7:10 PM. Noah Syndergaard will get the start and will face Williams Perez.
