Outfielder Carlos Gomez, designated for assignment by the New York Mets on Sunday, refused the assignment (via International League transactions), opting to become a free agent. Gomez, 33, signed a minor-league deal with the Mets in March.

Over 35 games (140 plate appearances) with Triple-A Syracuse, the Dominican native slashed .270/.329/.500 with six homers, 22 RBIs, and nine doubles, earning himself a mid-May call-up, just after Brandon Nimmo (neck) went down.

Despite ample playing time (34 games; 99 plate appearances) over six weeks with the Mets, Gomez couldn’t find a groove at the plate, hitting .198/.278/.337 with 30 strikeouts and looking, at times, overmatched in a major-league outfield despite not-atrocious defensive metrics (-2 DRS, -0.3 UZR, -4.1 UZR/150).
