Mets right-handed pitcher Carlos Carrasco was placed on the injured list with a fractured finger, per the Mets. Reliever Sam Coonrod was called up in his place.

The 36-year-old reportedly hurt the finger–the pinkie on his right hand–on Sunday when working out in the weight room. The typical recovery time for this injury is four-to-six weeks, meaning Carrasco’s season is basically over. He might have pitched his last game for the Mets, too.

Should he have started his last game this year, Carrasco ended another disappointing season with the Mets, this time producing a 6.80 ERA over 90 innings and 20 starts. His 2021 and 2023 seasons were full of injury, and they bookended a decent 2022, when he notched a 3.97 ERA over 152 innings.

Carrasco was acquired in the trade with Cleveland for Francisco Lindor, and the Mets picked up his option for the 2023 season after his solid 2022 campaign. They did so when they had few starting pitchers signed to the roster, and it felt like an obvious move. But injuries sidelined him again in 2023, and his season now ends due to an accident in the weight room.

He ultimately produced 5.21 ERA in 61 starts in his time with the Mets.

Showalter said José Butto will start in Carrasco’s place on Wednesday. With just 25 games left in the season, Butto feels like the natural candidate to take Carrasco’s rotation spot the rest of the way, too.
