The Mets kicked off their two-game set against the Nationals in an authoritative fashion.

They clubbed three home runs against Patrick Corbin and five in total on Tuesday night. Francisco Álavrez, who hadn’t homered since August 1, got that parade started with a first-inning blast that put the Mets up 4-0.

Francisco Lindor joined the home run party in the third inning, clubbing a solo shot for his 26th long ball of the year. Lindor recently joined the 25-25 club for the Mets and is four home runs and five steals away from joining Darryl StrawberryHoward Johnson, and David Wright in the Mets’ 30-30 club.

The Mets teed off on Corbin again in the third inning. Brandon Nimmo clubbed his 21st home run of the year in the third inning against the left-hander, pulling a slider down the left-field line. Nimmo continues to hit homers in 2023 and has breezed past his previous single-season home run record of 17.

Corbin was pulled after the fourth inning. He allowed three home runs and eight runs in four innings of work. Corbin has allowed 30 home runs this season which is tied with Aaron Nola for the sixth most in MLB. His ERA stands at 5.13.

Pete Alonso hit the Mets’ fourth home run in the fifth inning. He launched a ball to right field for his 42nd home run of the season and opened the Mets lead to 9-1. By reaching the 42nd home run plateau again in 2023, Alonso now holds the top two spots on the Mets’ single-season home run list. He’s also just four home runs of tying Johnson for fourth all-time with the Mets.

Nimmo added another home run on the night for the Mets in the ninth. His 22nd homer went to the opposite field and opened the Mets’ lead to 11-5.

The Mets hit five home runs in a game for the first time this year on Tuesday against the Nationals. They had hit four home runs in five previous games this season. All of them were solo home runs except for Álavrez’s in the first inning.

The baby Mets all had signature moments on Tuesday. Álvarez clubbed a three-run home run in the first, Mark Vientos hit an RBI triple in the third, Brett Baty singled in two runs in the fifth, and Ronny Mauricio drove in his first major league run in the eighth inning. The four of them were 5-for-13 with six RBI in their first time in the lineup together.

Meanwhile, José Quintana was overshadowed by the offense. The left-hander pitched seven brilliant innings, striking out four batters while allowing only one run. The start lowered Quintana’s ERA to 3.00.

However, once Quintana was pulled from the game, the Nationals started a rally against Sam Coonrod. The reliever struggled mightily, allowing two singles, walks, and hits batsman before being pulled without recording an out. Sean Reid-Foley came in to finish the inning, but the Nationals scored four earned runs which were all charged to Coonrod.

Player of the Game

Brandon Nimmo was the Metsmerized player of the game. He clubbed two home runs on Tuesday, one off Corbin in the third inning and one off Amos Willingham in the ninth inning. Nimmo now has 22 home runs this season.
