ESPN is reporting that the Oakland A’s and St. Louis Cardinals have completed a trade that sends outfielder Matt Holliday to St. Louis in exchange for third baseman Brett Wallace, outfielder Shane Peterson and right-handed pitcher Clayton Mortensen. The A’s are also including $1.5 million cash in the deal.
Wallace is considered an elite propspect and ranked #20 overall by Baseball America in their recent July rankings. (Or about 100 spots ahead of F-Mart!)
Holliday, 29, is eligible for free agency after this season, and has had a mediocre season since leaving the Rockies. He is hitting .287 with 11 homers and 54 RBIs.
It’s a great deal for the Cards, and it makes for a nice upgrade in their outfield and lineup. It’s going to be a nice fight to the finish in that central division.
Obviously this isn’t someone the Mets had any interest in, so no big loss to us. In fact, it may be safe to say that the Mets have no interest in any player… None… Zero… Zilch…
Of course they still have plenty of interest in ticket revenues, so please keep going to the games.
