Following the Mets’ Opening Day win yesterday, Mickey Callaway had nothing but praises to sing of new general manager Brodie Van Wagenen and his biggest move of the Winter: trading for Edwin Diaz and Robinson Cano from the Seattle Mariners.

When being asked about the impact made by Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz, Callaway said “That was a hell of a trade by Brodie. That’s what those guys are capable of.”

Cano made an impact right away, hitting a solo home run to the left center to give the Mets a first inning 1-0 lead. In the third, he got Victor Robles caught in a rundown between third and home that resulted in Robles being tagged out by Jeff McNeil for the third out of the inning.

In the eight inning with the Mets up 1-0, Cano singled in Dominic Smith to extend the lead to 2-0.

In the ninth, Edwin “Sugar” Diaz entered the game as a Met for the first time to try and secure his 110th career save. Diaz would set the side down in order and shut the door on a 2-0 Mets victory to start 2019. He recorded two fly outs and a strike out that ended the game.

When talking after the game, Cano said “That’s how you want to start as a team. I’m happy we won a game today.”

Cano is said to be showing a much needed veteran presence in a locker room that has a vast number of new faces compared to last year’s Opening Day. He has taken Amed Rosario under his wing, and sees “star” potential in him.

Diaz, on the other hand, is arguably the best young closer in baseball and is under club control for years to come.
