With his team well out of contention and the trade deadline quickly approaching, New York Mets manager Mickey Callaway made some open and honest statements before tonight’s game in Pittsburgh to reporters on a variety of subjects.
There’s been a ton of talk surrounding a few of the Mets’ starting pitchers, with Zack Wheeler setting himself apart from Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard as the most likely Mets hurler to be moved.
As was reported today, the Milwaukee Brewers have been in contact with the Mets regarding Wheeler, who appears to be pitching to his full potential after dealing with major injuries for a great deal of his career.
The San Diego Padres have been showing interest in both deGrom and Syndergaard, as per reports.
Callaway spoke about what the future could hold for his pitching staff, as well as the possibility of one of his starters getting dealt.
“We have a really good starting rotation I’d love to see together but (if) it improves who we are as an organization and team in the future, I totally understand having to get rid of one of those guys,” he said. “I feel good with our depth going into 2019…I think I feel like we have options if a trade like that happens.”
The Mets’ skipper also talked about one of the team’s main objectives as they head down the home stretch in a lost season.
“I think we’re going to spend a majority of the second half evaluating where we are as an organization, not just player wise but every facet of our organization,” Callaway said. “We need to make some adjustments with the way we do some things.”
