Well, how about that? This was an excellent team effort for the win tonight in Colorado and it wrapped up an excellent road trip for our New York Mets. Whether these games will matter down the line or not, it’s nice to see our team banding together and playing some decent baseball for an extended period of time.
It was Jeremy Hefner on the mound tonight — and surprise, surprise…he was effective. Hefner allowed two runs, only one earned, over six innings off five hits and a walk. He struck out three in what was, yet again, another quality effort from Hef-man. This was Hefner’s sixth quality start in his last seven outings.
The Rockies tagged Hefner for the two runs in the bottom of the second, off a sacrifice fly and a ground out — where Josh Satin made an error.
The Mets wouldn’t get on the board until the top of the fifth inning, where they loaded the bases with no out. Anthony Recker and Justin Hefner, consecutively, busted down the line to avoid grounding into double plays, and a run scored on Hefner’s grounder. Serious kudos to Hefner beating that grounder out, which made a huge difference down the line.
The top of the eighth brought another moment for you to add to the “why Marlon Byrd is likely going to be traded at the deadline” collection when he crushed a two-run home run to put the Mets ahead. They would keep this lead, as the bullpen combined for three scoreless innings with five strikeouts. LaTroy Hawkins was actually credited with the win, while Scott Rice danced out of trouble in the eighth.
Bobby Parnell looked impressive again in the ninth, as he continues to enjoy an impressive season, and was helped out by a bullet of a throw by Marlon Byrd to gun down Michael Cuddyer at second base. Parnell picks up save number 14 on the season.
The Mets will head back home tomorrow to take on the Nationals, and Matt Harvey will take the mound to begin the series. Harvey tends to bring the boys to the yard — including myself, Teddy Klein, and Matt Musico — so don’t be afraid to drop us a line and say hello tomorrow!
