After the bitter taste of last nights walk-off loss against the Brewers wore off, I recalled it wasn’t that long ago that we lost in similar fashion against the Braves in Atlanta.
I decided to look further and went to the best place for Mets research, Baseball Reference.
It took a while to go through every boxscore, but after double checking and triple checking here is what I discovered…
The Mets have already amassed six walk-off losses this season, and five of those heart-breakers have come this month.
4/14 – Mets lose 6-5 to Rockies – SP Jon Niese, LP Jenrry Mejia
5/3 – Mets lose 3-2 to Reds in 11 innings – SP Oliver Perez, LP Manny Acosta
5/5 – Mets lose 5-4 to Reds in 10 innings – SP Jon Niese, LP Pedro Feliciano
5/13 – Mets lose 2-1 to Marlins – SP Johan Santana, LP Fernando Nieve
5/18 – Mets lose 3-2 to Braves – SP Johan Santana, LP Pedro Feliciano
5/28 – Mets lose 2-0 to Brewers SP Johan Santana, LP Ryota Igarashi
Wow… Three walk-off losses in a row for Johan Santana.
Now I kind of get the feeling why Jerry Manuel decided to pull Pedro Feliciano after facing just one batter as he was responsible for two of the Mets walk-off losses and probably didn’t want to see a repeat performance of the May 18 game.
In each of the three Johan Santana walk-off losses, he left the game with the score tied; 2-2, 1-1 and last nights 0-0.
I wasn’t about to start going through the schedules for every team in the league, but I would venture a guess that six walk-off losses in a quarter of the season is a pretty high number.
