Jay Bruce was not supposed to be on the 2017 New York Mets roster, yet here he is, and helping them win games as their season hovers on life support.

Another case of that was Wednesday night when Bruce hit two home run in the Mets 4-3 win over the Texas Rangers. Bruce had half of the Mets hits and drove in three of the four runs. Both homers came off Yu Darvish, whom struck out nine and allowed only one hit to a Mets player not named Bruce.

“The two mistakes (Darvish) made, he made to me, and I was able to not miss them,” Bruce said after the game. “Against those aces, the chances you get is what you capitalize on.”

Bruce is now hitting .250/.322/.514 with a team leading 15 home runs and 40 RBI. He’s also tied for second on the team with 36 runs scored and 32 walks.

Nine of Bruce’s 15 home runs this year have given the Mets a lead. He’s also hitting a robust .298/.375/.617 in 56 plate appearances with the runners in scoring position.
